PROGRAMS
I believe everyone attending was inspired by the Zoom “Improve Pieced Letters” class on Jan 24, 2026 led by Sarah Goer. As with most classes, some took to the approach easily and some (e.g., me) struggled a bit. I’m sure including these projects in Feb Show N Tell will be appreciated.
Block Party Round Robin should have finished making the rounds of participants. Please be sure to bring the box currently in your possession to the Feb meeting. We would like to show & share the completed quilts (tops) at the June meeting.
Who knows where the Orphan Block Round Robin is?
Block of the month shared in Jan by Laura Lee is a book cover. The pattern is from Quilt Folk.
A block honoring the country’s 250th anniversary is requested to be completed and brought to the March meeting. The block should be 12 ½” square unfinished, using colors red, white & blue with the design intent to be expressive of the feeling of this date.
The May Meeting will include the Spring Social. Please bring a bookmark for the gift swap (Pinterest has ideas; can be any shape or concept).
Terrie and Darlene are organizing the Sleep Away Retreat May 14-17, 2026 at the Incarnation Center in Deep River (same as last year). $500 pp includes room & board, shared bathroom, free sew, opportunity for beautiful hikes/walks. Half of the fee is due at the Feb meeting with the other half due in March. Attendance is restricted to 15. (ps: Leslie won’t be able to join due to hand surgery mid-April so her space is available).
2026 Round Robin will start in Jun with “up cycle” as the theme. Fabric should come from a previous use (but not stretchy or knit)
Please let Programs know if there is interest in a T-Shirt quilt workshop.
The class Mapmaking by Timna Tarr will be offered in Sept.
Quilt Angel – random act of kindness; simple & inexpensive
2026 Challenge teaser – ripped fabric
AQS Juried Show the weekend April 8-11, 2026 in Hartford.
People who attended previously note that AQS members get preference for classes which sell out all but immediately. Attending lectures is highly recommended as an alternative. Last year’s keynote by Hillary Goodwin (entropyalwayswins.com), ER Doc, was phenomenal.
Charity – Columbus House is the current focus for Guild charity work along with on-going colorful pillowcases for hospitalized children. We have a number of quilts which need binding; if you have extra binding, please bring it in. If you have excess or unwanted fabric, It would be helpful if you could cut it into strips so that we can use it as binding for charity quilts.
Additional charitable work with Sew Powerful will be described and discussed.
The Board from 2025 believes that the below is an important quilters’ topic.
QUILT PRICING – this topic came up with respect to pricing Guild Quilts on offer at the show.
Quilts are not broadly thought of as ART. Non-quilters often have no idea of the cost of materials nor the hours of work to complete one; much less the training/experience reflected in the finished piece. Don’t succumb to “imposter syndrome.” We owe it to ourselves and the quilting community to respect the work. This means including both the cost of materials and the hours required along with an acknowledgement of the “education” and experience in achieving your level of skill as a Quilt Artist. The Minimum Wage for Unskilled Labor in Connecticut is $17/hr. A more reasonable wage for an experienced quilt artist is in the $50-70/hr range. “Don’t sell your quilt to $0.50 bottled water people; write a full price invoice even if you’ve accepted less.” Think of your sale as selling your art to a Collector.
