FAQs

What is Modern Quilting?

Modern quilting includes, but is not limited to: the use of bold colors and prints, high contrast and graphic areas of solid color, improvisational piecing, minimalism, expansive negative space, and alternate grid work. “Modern traditionalism” or the updating of classic quilt designs is also often seen in modern quilting.

What is the Modern Quilt Guild?

“The Modern Quilt Guild is made up of over 200 guilds across the country and world.  Our mission is to support and encourage the growth and development of modern quilting through art, education, and community.

The MQG developed out of the thriving online community of modern quilters and their desire to start meeting in person. The founding guild was formed in Los Angeles in October of 2009. Through blogs and the Internet, word spread quickly of the fun they were having and soon guilds started popping up everywhere.”

I’m a new quilter, is this out of my league?

All levels of skill are welcome. Our guild offers various types of workshops to hone skills, as well as teach new skills. We are all learning!

What are meetings like?

We are a community of quilters that like to laugh and enjoy life. Meetings usually begin with a recap of guild business (exciting upcoming events, guild projects, charity quilts, calls for volunteers, etc). After business is concluded, members participate in Show and Share. We encourage you to show finished or unfinished pieces, as well as other things you have created. If you show some work, you can pick a bit of fabric from the guild stash. A couple times during the year the guild has workshops after the meeting to learn new techniques. See calendar

What does it cost?

The first two meetings are free. Membership for the year is only $60.00. Besides being able to attend all the guild functions for free, membership includes access to the Modern Quilt Guild

I live outside of Connecticut, may I still attend meetings?

Absolutely! We have members that live in different states. We try to accommodate distant guild members with Zoom connections.

I have a question that was not answered here?
